Green Card Lottery Survey
Longitudinal survey of Green Card Lottery participants
This is a survey research project timed around the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (Green Card Lottery). The Green Card Lottery takes place annually, with participants applying for the program in the fall and winners notified in the spring. Winners who still desire to relocate go on to pursue the immigration process and may arrive in the US as early as the summer after notification. By surveying Green Card Lottery participants at each stage of the process every year, I ultimately hope to create a longitudinal dataset with a randomized component, the first of its kind in immigration research. This dataset will allow me to measure immigrants’ ideological orientations both pre and post-migration. Because Green Cards are awarded randomly to these applicants, I will be able to test a variety of hypotheses about the ways in which migration affects immigrants’ political attitudes with greater robustness.
